According to the latest reports from the Daily Record, Celtic have opened talks with Rapid Wien’s Sporting Director Zoran Barisic for the transfer of their star left-back Boli Mbombo. Celtic are in desperate need of adding cover in the fullback department, and it is no surprise to see them going after this in-demand left back.
The defender is already being linked with a move to Napoli and Sampdoria from the Serie A and Burnley from the Premier League. The 23-year-old still has two years left on his contract, so we think that a bidding war is likely to ensue between the said clubs for Mbombo.
Why Celtic need a left back?
Celtic are probably eyeing the Belgian as a possible replacement to Kieran Tierney who is being heavily linked with a move to Arsenal. Even if Celtic can thwart Arsenal’s approach for their academy star, the Hoops would need a backup left back as Emilio Izaguirre’s contract is about to expire in the next few days. There have been no talks of Celtic offering him a new deal.
What will Mbombo bring at Parkhead?
The left-back is primarily known for his attacking outlet. So much so that he can play as a left midfielder or even as a left winger. The Belgian has terrific pace, and he can trouble almost anyone with his searing speed. He is known for regularly providing overlapping runs, and he is often relentless in his approach.
His tenacity and work rate are also impressive, and it is no surprise to see a heavyweight club like Napoli also chasing him in the transfer market. Physically too, Mbombo should be able to handle the vigours of the Scottish Premiership.
The defender made 42 appearances for his side last season in all competitions and contributed with two goals and five assists.
Can Celtic win the race to sign him?
The Hoops have opened up talks according to recent reports, but we feel that they are currently second favourites to land a talent like Mbombo. Moreover, the fullback might not want to move to Glasgow as long as Tierney is there. Therefore Celtic’s only chance of signing the Belgian could be when they end up selling Tierney, and that would guarantee Mbombo regular game time at Parkhead.
Napoli and Burnley aren’t going to be any pushovers in the transfer market, and Celtic might have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to secure the signing of this talented left back.
