According to the latest reports from Belgian media outlet Walfoot, Celtic are interested in signing Mark Diemers from Eredivisie outfit Fortuna Sittard. The 25-year-old midfielder played a crucial role in helping his side avoid relegation as Diemers contributed with eight goals and eight assists in 38 games.
Diemers still has two years left on his contract so Fortuna Sittard can demand a sizeable fee for him as he only moved from De Graafschap a year ago. Bundesliga outfit Freiburg are said to be interested along with other Dutch sides as well.
Why might Celtic need a midfielder?
The Hoops have quite a few dynamic and attack-minded midfielders, but only Ryan Christie was able to match the expectations level last season. Olivier Ntcham is being linked with a move away from the club as the likes of Marseille and Porto want him. Tom Rogic struggled to hit his past form, and he also struggled with injuries. He too is being linked with a move to Leicester City.
Ewan Henderson and Nir Bitton filled in admirably during the injury crisis, and they did a decent job as backup options. However, they might still need some time to establish themselves as first team players. Therefore the Bhoys should look to add a standout midfield option to their roster.
What’s Diemers take on moving after just one season?
Diemers has already indicated that he is willing to move. He was quoted as saying a few weeks back, ”I know there is interest in me. I’ve heard a few things about clubs looking at me. If it’s a nice club, I will leave, and if not, I would be more than happy to continue playing for Sittard. But if I do leave, I will have nothing but happy memories of playing here.”
Will he be a good option for Lennon?
The 25-year-old is a dynamic and versatile player in midfield, and he would slot in well in various roles in the middle of the park. His defensive side to the game is impressive as well as his attacking side, and he could be a perfect box to box midfielder for the Bhoys.
Since Stuart Armstrong’s move to Southampton, Celtic have lacked a player who can fill in his role, and we feel that Diemers could be the right man to do something similar to which Armstrong provided at the club. Diemers can be a vital player in the final third as well, and Lennon should go ahead and try to bring him at Parkhead.
