According to Mirror, Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Dynamo Dresden goalkeeper Markus Schubert. The Gunners are keen to sign a new ‘keeper this summer amid reports linking David Ospina to a move to Napoli while Petr Cech has called an end to his decorated career.
And the report claims that the North London giants are days away from completing the transfer of Schubert. The German ‘keeper has impressed the onlookers with his performances in the 2.Bundesliga. But, he will leave the club for free following the expiry of his contract with Dresden at the end of this month.
Schubert’s success at Dresden
Schubert has been a part of the Dresden setup for a long time now, having earned promotion to the first team way back in 2015. But, it wasn’t until the 2017/18 campaign that the youngster finally managed to get into the starting lineup, making nine appearances during the corresponding season.
And following the end of Marvin Schwabe’s loan deal last summer, Schubert became a first-team regular at Dresden this past season. The 21-year-old ended the campaign making 31 appearances, during which he kept nine clean sheets while conceding 43 goals.
Schubert’s services in between the sticks played a critical role in keeping SGD out of the relegation scrap. The East German outfit finished 14the in the league table, seven points atop the relegation zone.
Schubert’s features as a goalkeeper
Schubert’s style of play can be compared to Manuel Neuer as he often likes to come out of his line and neutralise any potential scoring opportunities for the opposition. The youngster also boasts a tall frame of 1.87m, which helps him impose his presence inside the box. And this becomes useful, especially in set-pieces.
The 21-year-old has notably saved three penalties this season, which is quite impressive for any goalkeeper at any level of football. He is also advertised as an excellent shot-stopper from long-range efforts – making him a bright young talent in the world of goalkeepers.
Should Arsenal make a move for Schubert?
It’s no secret that Arsenal are operating with a limited budget this summer. That means they cannot afford to spend too much money on a goalkeeper and that’s where the addition of Schubert makes complete sense.
The German is available for free this summer and has also shown immense potential during his time with Dresden. He is also handpicked by Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, who is known for his ability to unearth hidden gems. Hence, the Dresden keeper is an ideal fit for the Gunners as they aim to kickstart a new era under Unai Emery next season.
