According to a recent report by OK Diario (translated by the Daily Star), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing the signature of Marco Asensio from Real Madrid in this offseason. However, the same source has also claimed that the Spanish midfielder has no intention to leave the Spanish capital as he is currently happy with life under Zinedine Zidane.
This recent development that Asensio won’t be available for a transfer will be a massive blow for Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino as he was keen on recruiting the Spaniard during the summer transfer window.
Marco Asensio’s Frustrations At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium This Season
Asensio had to experience a disappointing season with Los Blancos as he struggled to create or score goals consistently during this campaign. Hence, a change in scenery this summer would have been an ideal opportunity for the Madrid talent to reignite his career in European football.
The Spanish playmaker is a product of RCD Mallorca’s youth academy. He made a life-changing switch to join the Galacticos as a young player in the summer of 2015. However, Asensio failed to prove his worth at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and was sent out on a season-long loan spell to Espanyol. The Spaniard’s experience at the RCDE Stadium helped him develop as a wide player and break into Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI back in 2016.
Asensio has featured in a total of 44 matches for the Galacticos this term, finding the back of the net on six occasions while providing seven assists in all competitions. The Palma de Mallorca born midfielder has also earned 22 international caps for Spain while scoring one goal for them thus far.
What Will The Spanish Winger Add To Pochettino’s Side?
Asensio has decent pace, which helps him make some penetrative runs with the ball out on the flanks. He has an eye for a decisive pass in the attacking third of the pitch. Furthermore, the Spaniard can score goals from long range and is also an accomplished finisher inside the opposition penalty box. However, the 23-year-old’s inconsistent form at Madrid this season is a significant cause for worry for any of his potential suitors.
Should Pochettino Give Up His Pursuit Of Asensio This Summer?
The acquisition of a player of Asensio’s talents might have helped the North London outfit challenge on all fronts next season. However, if the reports from OK Diario are to be believed, then Spurs would have to give up on Asensio and to look at other alternatives for the Spaniard in the transfer market.
