According to the latest reports from Dutch media outlet ED, as cited by Wales Online, Leeds United have suffered a blow in their pursuit of PSV Eindhoven midfielder Justin Lonwijk. The Dutch heavyweights have offered the 19-year-old attacking midfielder a new contract, and it remains to be seen what the youngster decides.
Reports had earlier mentioned that Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt and Serie A heavyweights like AS Roma were after the midfielder’s signature along with the Whites. Lonwijk is currently in the final few months of his contract with the Dutch heavyweights, and he is going to be available on a free transfer in the summer. Lonwijk has represented Netherlands at various youth levels, and he currently plays for their u-19 side. He is considered a big talent in his homeland, and it is not surprising to see PSV offering him a new deal.
It is believed that Leeds United would have to end up paying €400,000 to the Dutch outfit if they secure Lonwijk’s signature as a compensation fee. However, with PSV offering him a contract extension, the ball is in the midfielder’s court on what he would want for his future.
Lonwijk is typically an attacking midfielder who can fill in as a secondary striker and as a central midfielder as well when required. Therefore his versatility should attract Marcelo Bielsa as the Argentine manager has often used various players in numerous positions this season.
Why Leeds United need an attacking midfielder?
Leeds United allowed Samuel Saiz to leave the club in January and since then, they have been using makeshift attacking midfielders. Tyler Roberts, Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe have played in those roles, and the club should look to add a proper option for the next season.
Chances of United signing him?
The Dutch midfielder is still a potential talent, and he would need to develop further to have a major impact at Leeds United. On a free transfer, the 19-year old’s signing looks impressive. However, the recent reports should come as a blow to the club.
Moreover, Leeds United might have to move to the Premier League to attract talent like him as top-flight clubs from Germany and Italy also want him. Therefore as of now, the Whites are outsiders to sign Lonwijk on a free transfer in the summer. However, the chance to work with Bielsa and the way he has propelled the youngsters at Elland Road this season can make Lonwijk think about moving to the West Yorkshire outfit.
