According to a recent report by AS (via the Daily Star), Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move to secure the services of Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos during the summer transfer period. The same source has claimed that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has identified the La Liga talent as an ideal replacement for Christian Eriksen if the Dane ends up leaving the club at the end of this campaign.
Ceballos’ Mediocre Season At The Spanish Capital
Ceballos has experienced an underwhelming campaign at the Spanish capital this term as he has struggled to be productive in the opposition half. However, he has still managed to make 34 appearances for the Galacticos this season, finding the back of the net on three occasions while grabbing two assists in all competitions.
The Spaniard came through the youth ranks of Real Betis before his big move to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the summer of 2017. The 22-year-old has also earned six international caps for Spain while scoring one goal for them thus far.
Maybe a change in scenery could help Ceballos reignite his career in European football. The fact that so many world-class talents surround him at Madrid hasn’t helped his cause so a move to Spurs could be a perfect opportunity for him to make a fresh start in a different league.
What Will The Spaniard Bring To North London?
The Spanish midfielder doesn’t have too much pace under his belt, but he is still quite an effective dribbler with the ball at his feet. He can make some well-timed runs from midfield and is always willing to join in on the attack. Ceballos can also link up play well with others around him and has an eye to play a defence-splitting in the final third.
Why Ceballos Won’t Be An Ideal Replacement For Eriksen
The potential acquisition of Ceballos will undoubtedly improve Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at the North London club. However, the Spaniard can’t hold a candle to Eriksen who is much more productive going forward. The Dane is more of a goal-threat in the opposition half and is widely regarded as one of the best playmakers in Premier League football.
Hence, it won’t be easy for Pochettino to replace Eriksen if he parts ways with Spurs this summer. Ceballos could be a good squad player at White Hart Lane, but as far as replacing Eriksen is concerned, he is not good enough to fill in the Danish international’s shoes at North London.
