According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are the favourites to bring Celta de Vigo forward Maxi Gomez to England during the summer transfer period. The same source has mentioned that both West Ham United and Liverpool are on the verge of dropping their interest on the La Liga goal-getter which could pave the way for Spurs to make a swoop in this off-season.
The Daily Star has also claimed that the Uruguayan talent has a £43m release clause in his contract with Celta.
Maxi Gomez’s Incredible Rise To Prominence In Spain
The 22-year-old worked his way up the youth ranks of the Uruguayan outfit, Defensor before he made a life-changing move to Spain to play for Celta Vigo in the summer of 2017.
Gomez has experienced another impressive season in the La Liga after he put in a string of eye-catching performances under Fran Escribá’s guidance during this campaign. The South American sensation’s stellar goal-scoring contributions have helped his club narrowly avoid being relegated from the Spanish top-flight. If it weren’t for Gomez and his prolific partnership with former Liverpool forward Iago Aspas, Celta would have undoubtedly been demoted to the Segunda División this season.
The Uruguayan centre-forward has made 36 appearances for the Spanish outfit this term, registering 13 goals while providing five assists across all competitions. Gomez has also earned 11 international caps for Uruguay and has found the back of the net once for his nation thus far.
What Will The La Liga Prospect Bring To North London?
The Paysandu born forward has decent pace in his locker and can be a dominant presence in the attacking third of the pitch. However, what makes him a prolific goal-getter is his ability to get the ball over the line when his team needs him the most. Furthermore, he is also not shy about creating plays for others around him, which makes him such an invaluable asset for Celta.
Gomez’s potential signing will significantly boost Mauricio Pochettino’s attacking options at the new White Hart Lane. He has all the makings of a top centre-forward and has the talents to compete with Harry Kane for a regular starting berth under Pochettino next season. The Uruguayan prospect will also add more goals to the Tottenham frontline which might help the North London club bridge the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool in the coming years.
