According to a recent report by Italian news outlet Il Mattino, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on securing the signature of Boca Juniors midfielder Agustín Almendra during the summer transfer window. However, the same source has also claimed that Spurs will face stiff competition from Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Benfica in pursuit of the Argentine youngster.
The Recent Emergence Of Agustin Almendra
Almendra came through the youth ranks of Boca Juniors before finally establishing himself as a first-team regular last year. He has put in some dazzling displays for the Argentine giants during this campaign. The 19-year-old has found the back of the net once while creating one assist in 19 matches for Boca across all competitions.
He is currently the captain of the Argentina Under-20 side having made five appearances for them thus far. Almendra had also got a taste of what it’s like to win a trophy when he lifted the Primera Division title with Boca Juniors last season.
However, the South American wonderkid is still quite a raw talent and will need time to develop his game and unlock his true potential. Thus, Spurs need to be patient with him if they manage to land him in this offseason.
What Will Almendra Add To Pochettino’s Side?
The Argentine sensation can read the game well, which allows him to take up dangerous positions in the opposition half. He is also full of tricks when dribbling with the ball and can score a few goals from long range. However, Almendra is far from a finished product and needs to work on improving his game in midfield.
A player of the Argentine’s potential will undoubtedly improve Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options in the future. For now, Spurs have already got two bright young midfielders in Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp who are on the verge of breaking into Pochettino’s starting XI.
Should Tottenham Sign The Argentine Midfielder?
Thus, it doesn’t make sense for them to opt for an unproven talent like Almendra as he won’t benefit the North London outfit’s potential title charge next season. Pochettino should instead concentrate on signing big-name players so that Spurs can bridge the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings next season.
