According to a recent report by Il Mattino (via Sports Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing the services of Amadou Diawara from Napoli during the summer transfer period. The same source has also claimed that the Naples outfit will allow him to leave if the right offer comes in for him in this offseason.
Diawara’s Career In A Nutshell
The Guinean defensive midfield ace came through the youth ranks of FC Sequence before he made a life-changing switch to Italy to play for San Marino back in 2015. Diawara joined Bologna just six months later where he rose to prominence, making a total of 35 appearances for them across all competitions.
Napoli decided to give him a shot in the summer of 2016, and since his move to Naples, Diawara has managed to work on his game and break into Napoli’s first-team. The Guinean has been a sporadic feature for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this term as he featured in only 19 matches for them in multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old has made an average of 1.1 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per game for Napoli (Stats taken from Whoscored). Even though his numbers this season are not that impressive, Diawara has incredible potential to become a world-class midfielder in the coming years.
What Will The Guinean Add To Pochettino’s Team?
Diawara has decent pace under his locker which enables to make clever runs from midfield. He is also a good distributor of the ball and can be dominant in the air due to his commanding physical presence. However, the Guinean needs to add more productivity to his game if he wants to succeed at the highest level.
The acquisition of the Napoli midfielder will undoubtedly improve Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at the new White Hart Lane next season. He could be the perfect long-term replacement for Moussa Dembele who left Spurs during the January transfer window. The former Bologna midfielder will also increase competition for places within the Tottenham squad.
At 21, Diawara still has a lot of time to develop himself into a top midfielder so Spurs would need to be patient with him if they are successful in bringing him to North London ahead of the new season.
