According to a recent report by Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur have put an end to their interest in signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona during the summer transfer window. The same source has revealed that the Catalans are eager to cash in on the Portuguese midfielder and are asking for a fee between £25m and £35m for their prized asset.
Gomes’ Incredible Spell At Merseyside
However, Spurs have dropped out of the race to secure the services of the Barca talent who impressed a lot of people during his loan spell at Everton in the recently concluded Premier League campaign. Gomes made 29 appearances for the Toffees this term, getting his name on the scoresheet just once while providing two assists across all competitions.
The Portuguese midfield ace had previously played for clubs such as Dragon Force, FC Porto, Boavista, Benfica and Valencia before he decided to join Luis Enrique’s revolution at the Nou Camp in the summer of 2016.
However, he has struggled to secure regular game time under Barca’s current boss, Ernesto Valverde, so it is no surprise the La Liga champions are trying to part ways with him this summer.
The ex-Boavista playmaker is vastly experienced in European football so he could have helped Spurs compete on all fronts next season. Gomes has also earned 29 international caps for Portugal and could play an integral role for his nation in the coming years.
What Does The Portuguese Midfielder’s Strengths?
Gomes has a wide passing range in his locker and boasts terrific ball control, which enables him to make some decisive passes in the opposition half. He tends to keep his composure during high-pressure situations and also haas a high football IQ, which makes him a perfect fit for Mauricio Pochettino’s style of play at North London.
Did Pochettino Make The Correct Call?
Thus, it is baffling to see Spurs drop their interest on the Barca midfielder. He would have undoubtedly improved Pochettino’s midfield options at the new White Hart Lane. Furthermore, he would have increased competition for places within the Tottenham squad.
It feels like a mistake by the North London outfit to pass up the opportunity to sign Gomes this summer as he has all the skillset required to succeed in the Premier League for years to come.
