Rangers are likely to see Celtic wrap up all the domestic trophies once again, but there are some positives for them to take from this season. All they need is to do is add a few more impact players and bring more consistency in their performance, and they can challenge Celtic in the next season.
However, they could be without their star striker Alfredo Morelos who has indicated that he wants to move to a more competitive league. The Colombian’s stock has fallen rapidly in the past one odd month ever since he received the red card in the Old Firm derby in March.
Gerrard continued with Jermain Defoe upfront even when the 29 goal striker became available for selection after serving his suspension. Recently the forward was dealt a massive blow as his name wasn’t mentioned in Colombia’s 40-man provisional squad for the Copa America. It’s clear that his suspension in the last stages of the season didn’t help his cause.
What did Morelos say?
On his future, the striker recently said (Football Scotland), ‘’ There is a lot of speculation about my possible departure, but there is nothing concrete yet. I know that there are many interesting clubs asking and as soon as there is something official I will be announcing it.”
“But I’m committed to Rangers just now. I’ve had a good season, and many clubs are interested, and hopefully, everything will be done in the right way. I dream of playing in a much better, more competitive league. I look at the English Premier League and the Spanish League. The leagues in France and Italy are very big leagues too and very competitive.’’
Why Morelos’ disciplinary record can be a problem for Rangers?
It’s clear that the forward’s head would turn if an offer comes from some of the top divisions. Morelos had often mentioned in the past that Premier League was his dream destination. If Rangers get the right price for him, then they might cash in on him in the summer. However, a wrong end to a top class season will make the prospective clubs sceptical about moving in for the 22-year-old striker. Therefore it is unlikely that Rangers will be able to get the full price based on the striker’s footballing abilities.
What now for Gerrard?
However, all this might work in Rangers’ favour as they recently got Morelos on a new, improved contract. Therefore they shouldn’t be in any hurry to sell him in the summer transfer window if the price is not right. The striker might be desperate to show his form next season after the Colombian national team ignored him and all these factors might end up helping Gerrard in the upcoming season.
