According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, Rangers are set to come up with an improved bid for Oldham Atheltic’s defender George Edmundson. The Gers initially submitted a bid of £400,000 which was rejected by the League two outfit. The Latics also rejected proposals from Hull City and Peterborough United. Championship clubs like Wigan, Stoke and Derby are also said to be interested in the English defender.
Oldham recently tried to tie down Edmundson on a new contract, but the 21-year-old rejected it. Oldham are resigned to losing Edmundson, and they might try to entice a bidding war to earn as much as they can for their star defender. Just recently reports from the Express had emerged that Rangers would wait before coming up with a new offer, but now it seems like Gerrard is willing to come up with an improved bid.
Why might Gerrard be impatient over the other English clubs?
Rangers are set to play in the Europa League qualifiers, and they begin weeks in advance before the actual league season. The Gers are going to lose the likes of Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall in the next few weeks, and that would leave the club with only two defensive options in the form of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.
Therefore one can understand why Gerrard is looking to come up with an improved offer so soon as he needs to prepare his team early for the European competition.
What can Edmundson bring at Ibrox?
The defender had a breakthrough campaign in the League Two, and he was the mainstay of his side’s defence as he made over 50 appearances in all competitions. Edmundson has that physical side to his game which is often necessary for thriving in the Premiership. To go with that, he can read the dangers well and can sniff them out before they can develop.
What should be Gerrard’s play?
The Englishman is soon going to enter the final year of his contract. The defender had a decent season, but he is yet to be tested at a higher level. It remains to be seen how much improvement Gerrard would come up with in the new offer. Edmundson is far from a finished product, and he might take some time to settle in.
Our advice for Gerrard would be to sign a proven and experienced defender as Rangers cannot afford to have anymore ‘potential’ top signings as he needs to deliver results and titles in the upcoming season. As for Edmundson, we would want Gerrard to play the waiting game instead of coming up with an improved offer for now.
