According to the latest reports from the Express, Rangers are said to be keen on signing Liverpool’s winger Sheyi Ojo. The Englishman spent the last season on loan with Ligue 1 outfit Reims where he managed to make 18 appearances in all competitions. One would classify his loan spell as an unsuccessful one as he started only three games in the French top division.
However, that isn’t bothering Gerrard who has already brought on quite a few players with Liverpool connection. Ryan Kent has won Rangers’ young player of the season award, and the Gers are once again keen to sign him on loan from Liverpool. The signing of Ovie Ejaria didn’t work as he decided to cut short his loan spell. Jon Flanagan has filled in well from time to time in the left back spot.
Therefore it is no surprise to see Rangers being linked with another fringe player from the Mersersey side club. Ojo has eight appearances to his name in the Premier League, but it is unlikely that he would find game time given that the Reds have Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri as their right-wing option.
Therefore Liverpool could very well send Ojo on another loan spell. It is being reported that Liverpool will hand him a five-year extension before sending him on another loan spell.
What can Ojo brig to the table?
The England u-21 international has got impressive pace and acceleration. He has a bit of Ejaria in him as he can be tough to get off the ball when in possession. However, he needs to improve big time with his decision making in the final third.
Does Rangers need Ojo?
The 21-year-old is adept at playing on both the flanks, but he predominantly plays as a right winger. Rangers have got Daniel Candeias for that position. The Gers have also secured the signatures of Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie who are both left wingers. Rangers are also keen on getting Ryan Kent back on another loan spell. Therefore if Kent stays then, Hastie and Jones are likely to play on the right flank.
Forgotten winger Jamie Murphy is also an option on the flanks as he is going to be available for the next season after his lengthy injury spell. Eros Grezda is also a winger so one can see how packed the Gers are in the wide regions. Therefore we don’t know how Ojo will get regular game time at the Ibrox.
If there are departures (most likely Grezda) and the Gers are unable to land Kent, then only we can make a case for the signing of Ojo.
