Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff is attracting a lot of interest from Manchester United in the transfer market. Credible sources had claimed that the Red Devils are keen on the midfielder and they have been tracking him from when he had a run in the first team before he was brought down by injuries.
However, latest reports from the Chronicle claims that Newcastle United will not look to sell their upcoming star under any circumstances in the summer. It is believed that the player is also happy at the Tyneside. The midfielder signed a contract extension just last year, but the Magpies are willing to offer him a new and improved contract after his breakthrough season for the Magpies. However, any talks on Longstaff’s contract would only commence after Rafael Benitez’s future has been decided.
The report adds that Manchester City and Liverpool scouts were also keeping track of the midfielder’s situation, but it is clear that Newcastle will continue to maintain a tough stance on him.
What makes Longstaff stand out?
The midfielder had a breakthrough campaign this season, and at no times it looked like he was out of place at this level. Longstaff’s performance kept the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung Yueng and Mohamed Diame out from the first eleven and that is a testament about how much Benitez rates him and how good he has been for the Magpies this season.
The 21-year-old is being seen as a future superstar and Newcastle will look to hold on to their academy star for as long as possible. The midfielder seems calm and composed on the ball, and he is hardly hurried when in possession.
Longstaff also showcases an impressive work rate in the middle which is often a must-have for a midfielder in Benitez’s setup. The midfielder seems to have that extra second to pick out a pass, and his relaxed playing style reminds us of Michael Carrick.
Right approach from Newcastle?
It remains to be seen what kind of offer Manchester United comes up with here. Longstaff already has his contract at St. James’ Park until 2022, and the Magpies are even looking to give him a new deal on top of that. Therefore the bid must blow Newcastle out of the water if the fallen Manchester giants want to sign Newcastle’s homegrown talent.
We don’t expect Newcastle United to lose their resolve on the midfielder even if a decent figure is thrown at them. The Magpies should keep hold of him at all cost as Longstaff is going to be the future and mainstay of the club in midfield.
