According to The Sun, Newcastle United have identified Jan Hurtado as a top target in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Venezuelan forward currently plies his trade at Gimnasia y Esgrima, in the Argentinian top flight. The report further claims that the Magpies have already approached Hurtado as they aim to solidify their attacking unit for the next season.
Does Newcastle United need someone like Hurtado?
The lack of substance in the attacking department has been one of Newcastle’s main weaknesses this campaign. Only four teams have scored fewer goals than the Tyneside outfit in the league so far.
All four sides that have scored less than Newcastle are currently dawdling at the bottom end of the table, and this could be a problem for Rafael Benitez next season. Even when Newcastle United have managed to conjure up chances in the final third, the lack of end-product has often let them down this season.
Frontline attacker Salomon Rondon has done relatively well in creating spaces for other teammates. But, the Venezuelan international faces an uncertain future at St.James’ Park, despite his initial wish to prolong his stay at the club. Hence, Newcastle United could certainly use the services of someone like Hurtado. The 19-year-old has already showcased immense potential, despite scoring only two goals in 17 games in the Argentine top flight this season.
What can Hurtado bring to the table for Newcastle?
Much like his compatriot, Hurtado is a robust and well-built attacker, who is tailor-made for the physically astute nature of the Premier League. He is also advertised as a versatile attacker as he can operate in the wide-attacking role. He could, thus, offer Benitez with additional options as far as tactical choices are concerned. But, what makes him a class apart from Rondon is his raw pace.
The 19-year-old can generate a burst of pace that allows him to get past defenders. It also becomes quite useful in counter-attacking situations. In contrast, Rondon has faced a lot of criticism for his lack of pace and ability in the final third. And to that end, Hurtado will undoubtedly be an upgrade and a better fit under Benitez’s counter-attacking philosophy at Newcastle.
However, the Venezuelan will need to improve his productivity in front of goal if he is to find success in the Premier League. But, his positives outweigh his negative. And at the age of just 19, he can be groomed into a world-class forward in the near future.
