According to the latest reports from Sky Sports, Newcastle United are in the race to sign Liverpool’s winger Harry Wilson. Southampton and Brighton are also said to be interested in the Wales international. Reports state that Liverpool are valuing him at £25m after his impressive season for Derby County in the Championship.
Wilson is currently the top scorer for the Rams this season after contributing with 18 goals in all competition to go with six assists. Derby County are one step away from reaching the Premier League as they are set to face Aston Villa in the playoff finals. Wilson has already played a massive role for his side this season, and without him, the Rams would have struggled.
It is being said Derby themselves would be keen on keeping Wilson again if they manage to win promotion. Crystal Palace can also join the race for him as the Eagles are seeing him a possible replacement for Wilfried Zaha who is being linked with a move away from Selhurst Park.
Therefore Newcastle United’s task will be cut out as quite a few clubs are lining up for Wilson’s signature. The Magpies first need to sort their managerial situation before they look to do business in the transfer market.
What can Wilson bring at the Tyneside club?
Wilson might still be just 22, but he has been around the blocks playing at a higher level for quite some time now. He made his debut for Wales when he was just 16. Last season, he joined Hull City in the second half of their campaign and saved them from a relegation battle as he fired 11 goals and provided four assists in 13 games for them.
His performance in the Championship in the last one and a half season has showcased that he is now good enough to play in the Premier League. The youngster struggled initially because of his small built, but now he is adept at keeping defenders at bay.
Wilson has decent pace, but he is not as fast as other wingers. However, he makes up for that with his incisive link-up play and finishing in the final third. Often young wingers are guilty of not taking their chances or finding the right ball in the attacking third, but the Welshman is good at that.
Is he worth £25m?
Liverpool have Wilson on a contract until 2023. Therefore it is no surprise that they are demanding such a price for him. Newcastle United are not known to splash too much cash in the transfer market. £25m looks like a bit too much for someone like him. Plus the 22-year-old isn’t proven in the Premier League yet.
