According to the latest reports from the Metro, Manchester United are interested in signing Norwich City’s defensive ace Ben Godfrey. The versatile defender became a crucial part of Daniel Farke’s side later on in the season as he started to play in the centre back role.
All this while, everyone expected him to be a defensive midfield option, but the Englishman did exceedingly well for his side in the Championship as a centre half.
United legend Rio Ferdinand has recommended the defender to his former side as they are going through a crisis at the back. It is believed that Norwich could demand up to £15m for him in the summer. This is not surprising as heavyweight clubs usually try to prise away stars from Championship winning sides, and the Canaries should be prepared for such interest in their players after a successful campaign.
What makes Godfrey special?
His versatility to play in various roles is his foremost asset. The defender has even filled in at left back this season when required, and a player like him can come in handy for any side. His passing and ball carrying abilities makes his stand out more than other defenders, and that is the reason why Farke decided to bring in Godfrey in the side ahead of Timm Klose later on in the season.
The Canaries like to build up from the back, and with Godfrey being comfortable on the ball, the Championship winners had their perfect centre back in the 21-year-old.
Should Farke sell him for £15m?
Godfrey is still in the nascent stage of his career, and there is no doubt he has potential in him. £15m seems to be a decent sum, but Farke should want to keep the core of his side intact while preparing to survive in the Premier League for the next season. A good season in the English top flight can propel Godfrey’s price further and given his age and unique abilities; he could go for double the amount after an impressive season in the Premier League. Therefore we think that the club should look to keep hold of him for another year atleast.
The versatile defender has his contract at the Carrow Road until 2022. Therefore Farke should be in a strong position to negotiate the best price for the defender. However, Godfrey’s head could turn when a club like Manchester United comes calling. So it remains to be seen what would pan out in the upcoming summer transfer window.
