According to a recent report by Record (via Manchester Evening News), Manchester City are prepared to meet Juventus’ valuation of €60m for their Portuguese right-back Joao Cancelo during the summer transfer window. The same source has revealed that the Citizens right-back Danilo faces an uncertain future at the Etihad Stadium so he could be replaced by the Juventus full-back ahead of the new campaign.
Do The Citizens Need A New Right-Back?
Man City have won a domestic treble after emerging victorious in the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup this season. However, they are yet to make it beyond the quarter-finals stage of the UEFA Champions League which will be a disappointment for them heading into this offseason.
Hence, Cancelo could be a signing who comes in and does well for Man City in Europe as Kyle Walker has often struggled in the Champions League this season as evidenced by his underwhelming display versus Tottenham Hotspur at the new White Hart Lane last month.
Cancelo’s Impressive Campaign In The Serie A
The Portuguese talent has enjoyed a productive campaign in Turin after putting in some dazzling displays down the right flank for Juventus during this season. He has featured in 34 matches for Massimiliano Allegri’s side this term, scoring one goal while grabbing eight assists in all competitions.
More importantly, Cancelo has made an average of 1.7 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 1.5 clearances per game for the Serie A giants thus far (Stats taken from Whoscored).
What Will The Portuguese Full-back Bring To The Etihad Stadium?
Cancelo boasts blistering pace which enables him to dribble with the ball at high speed down the right wing. He can also deliver some dangerous crosses into the opposition penalty box and is a striker’s dream due to his unselfish nature in the final third.
The 24-year-old is also a decent defender inside his own half as he can make some essential interceptions for his team. The addition of a player of Cancelo’s European pedigree will undoubtedly improve the Man City squad next season. He will not only be an upgrade over Danilo but will also give Walker a run for his money for a first-team berth at the blue half of Manchester. Hence, the Premier League champions will do well to acquire his services this summer.
