In a recent interview with Sky Sports Germany (translated by the Liverpool Echo), Red Bull Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has provided an update on Timo Werner’s future and said, “The situation is still the same. Timo Werner would rather not sign an extension.
“But that could change.
“I don’t think it’s completely out of the question that he could extend his deal. We haven’t talked to Bayern Munich about Timo Werner yet.
“Maybe he doesn’t even want to go to Munich. Maybe he would rather join Tuchel in Paris, Klopp at Liverpool or Favre at Dortmund.”
Mintzlaff’s words indicate that the Reds are still in the running to secure the services of the German striker this summer. However, Jurgen Klopp will face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in pursuit of the Bundesliga goal-getter.
Why Liverpool Need A Forward Like Werner?
The Merseyside giants have sometimes lacked a bit of firepower in the final third as Klopp doesn’t have traditional centre-forward spearheading his attack up top. Roberto Firmino has been quite effective while playing in the number 10 position as a false-9 striker, but the Brazilian is more effective when making plays for his teammates rather than be a lethal goal-getter himself in front of the opposing goal.
Hence, recruiting a new forward like Werner could help the Reds compete on all fronts next season. The German frontman has enjoyed another fabulous season with RB Leipzig this term after he put in a string of match-winning displays in the German top-flight during this campaign.
The German Forward’s Eye-Catching Record At Leipzig
The 23-year-old has found the back of the net 19 times while providing 11 assists in 36 appearances for Ralf Rangnick’s side this term in multiple competitions. Werner would undoubtedly provide some healthy competition for Firmino as the German striker offers more pace and athleticism up top.
Will Werner Be A Good Choice For The Reds?
The German international boasts blistering pace which helps him make well-timed runs behind the opposing backline. More importantly, he is a prolific goal-scorer at the highest level so we can expect him to add a lot of goals to Klopp’s team.
Hence, the Leipzig talisman could be a clever signing for the Reds in this off-season. He will not only improve the quality of the Liverpool first-team but will also enhance their chances of tasting silverware in the coming years.
