Celtic are on track for a ‘treble treble’, and once again they have ruled the roost in Scotland. They might have missed out on qualifying to the Champions League this season, but they did make it out of their group in the Europa League. The club even went on to lose their talismanic boss Brendan Rodgers, but their juggernaut has continued under Lennon.
However, all is not going to be hunky dory in the summer as the club will have a lot of decisions to make and problems to solve. One of them would be getting a new centre half as the club is set to lose the services of Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic.
Boyata’s situation has been accepted by the club and fans for quite some time now, and Celtic need to bring in an experienced defender to support the likes of Kristoffer Ajer, Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry.
Which player can they go for?
We feel that they can look to target Chelsea defender Gary Cahill who has seemingly run his course with the English heavyweights. The 33-year-old defender has played just seven games this season, and it is clear that he is unlikely to have much impact in their squad.
Cahill’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and he is going to be available on a free transfer. Therefore Celtic can get a Premier League pedigree defender for nothing. Currently, Cahill is being linked with Fulham who are set to go down to the Championship. Celtic is definitely a more lucrative destination than the Cottagers as Cahill can get a chance to win trophies as well as play in the European competition.
Why Cahill?
Cahill joined the Pensioners in 2012, and he played a massive role in their two Premier League title triumphs. The defender is already 33, but he could be picked up on a one or two year deal. Cahill has always been reliable in the air, and he reads the dangers well before it can develop. Not blessed with too much pace, Cahill’s decision making and commitment have made him the defender which he is today. There is no doubt that he can still do a job for the Hoops.
Moreover, he can help the young defenders of the club with his valuable expertise which he has earned by playing over 340 games in the Premier League. The addition of Cahill will also add a leader in the side. It’s true that the English defender wouldn’t be a long term solution to Celtic’s problems, but on a free transfer, he can turn out to be a shrewd signing for the club.
