According to the latest reports from German media outlet Bild, Leeds United and Norwich City are going to go head-to-head for the signature of Wolfsburg’s midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj. It is being reported that both the teams are willing to spend £7m on the 21-year-old midfielder.
However, the report does add that Rexhbecaj is keen to stay in Germany with Wolfsburg where he has managed to establish himself in the first team. The midfielder has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season. The midfielder came up from Wolfsburg’s academy, and he has been at the club since 2010. One can understand why he is still keen to stay in Germany as Wolfsburg are a top half side and Leeds and Norwich are playing in the Championship.
Norwich have secured promotion to the Premier League so they would look to bolster their squad to stay in the English top flight. Leed United, on the other hand, need to win the playoffs if they want promotion as a poor run of form in the last few games cost them the chance to move to the English top flight through the direct promotion spots.
Irrespective of whether they gain promotion or not, the Whites need to add firepower and reinforcement to their squad. They have punched above their weight with the current set of players Bielsa has at his disposal. Injuries have troubled them throughout the season, but they continued with their impressive run under Marcelo Bielsa.
Why Leeds United need a midfielder?
However, they need to add a midfielder to their roster. Mateusz Klich has played for the most part this season as a central midfielder, and the Polish international has looked tired on occasions. Bielsa only had Adam Forshaw as the other option in midfield who also acted as a deputy to Kalvin Phillips in the defensive midfield position.
Given the high-intensity brand of football the Yorkshire outfit plays, they would do well in adding a new midfielder to their roster. Rexhbecaj is a budding talent who is slowly establishing himself for his side. He showcases impressive pace and work rate, and that is often key to Bielsa’s style of play. The German is versatile enough to play in various roles in the middle of the park so that should also come in handy for the Whites.
Chances of Bielsa getting his man?
However, Rexhbecaj is still an unknown quantity, and spending £7m on him could be a bit too much if United fails to get promoted. Norwich certainly have an edge with their promotion already secured. Moreover, Daniel Farke is well known in the German football circuit, and he has already brought in quite a few players from the Bundesliga. Those players have played a considerable role this season. As of now, we feel that the West Yorkshire outfit are outsiders to sign Rexhbecaj who is anyway keen to stay at Wolfsburg.
