Rangers have ended their season on a high as they managed to win every game after the table split, and most importantly they went past Celtic with ease which should give them great confidence in preparing for the next season. The club have shown that with the right attitude, they can challenge the Hoops who had looked invincible in the last few years.
What did Gerrard say?
However, there are still certain areas where Rangers need to bring in reinforcements, and Gerrard recently talked about how he is planning for the upcoming summer transfer window. He said (Daily Record), ”I don’t think it will be like last summer. Obviously, we felt we needed big changes in different areas, and we wanted to freshen it up with a lot of newnesses because we felt it was broken and fractured in certain areas as a club.”
”At the moment we can only strike for the frees that are maybe out there, for the pre-contracts which we’ve done. When the window opens, we want to go and strike for the areas of the pitch where we feel we need real quality to take us to the next level.”
Gerrard has clearly indicated that he is looking for players who can straightaway make an impact in the next season. The Gers have been active even before the transfer window has opened as they have secured the services of Jake Hastie, Jordan Jones and Greg Stewart.
Right ploy from the manager?
We don’t expect the club to make the wholesale changes like last season. The Gers have managed to add depth and quality to the squad in the previous two windows and the upcoming summer transfer period could be crucial to which side might dominate the Scottish football landscape for the next few years.
The Hoops will also need major surgery to the squad as they have quite a few players who are likely to depart from the club. Celtic might have more financial power than Rangers, but the Bears have shown that they can compete with their arch-rivals this season as they defeated them twice. Even in the game in March where they went down to 10 men, they looked like coming up with a positive result, and it was their own mistakes that cost them that tie.
Rangers need to make sure that they add players who can hit the ground running as they will be desperate to stop Celtic from achieving their 9th Premiership title in a row. Gerrard is on the right path as he indicated he would be looking to add quality instead of quantity in the upcoming summer window.
