According to Football Insider, Everton are mulling over a move for Chelsea defender Reece James. The young defender spent the 2018/19 season on loan to Wigan, emerging as one of Championship’s best performers in the corresponding campaign. As a result, the Toffees are keen to secure a move for the 19-year-old this summer. But, they could face stiff competition, with Manchester United, Brighton and Burnley also interested.
What can James add to the table for Everton?
James has been an ever-present figure in the Wigan backline, featuring in 45 league matches so far this season. He has mostly operated in the right-back slot. But, the fact that he has also been utilised as a centre-back is indicative of his defensive versatility.
As far as his gameplay is concerned, James is an attack-minded fullback, blessed with immense technical quality. He has averaged an impressive 1.6 key passes per game this season, most of which have come from crosses.
The 19-year-old is also known for aggression and willingness to win back possession for his team. He has averaged over two tackles per game. And this could make him an ideal fit for Silva’s tactical philosophy at Goodison Park.
Does Everton need someone like James?
Everton manager Marco Silva has recently revealed his wish to bolster the right-back department this summer. Seamus Coleman has been the first-choice right-back, for the most part, this season. But, the Irishman has struggled with a lack of consistency and injuries.
Additionally, the young Jonjoe Kenny has been largely overlooked by Silva, thus accentuating the need for a new right-back this summer. James, in that regard, could be an attractive option for the Portuguese.
As iterated earlier, the 19-year-old loves to move forward at every opportunity and could provide extensive attacking support from the right-hand side. He may not match the brilliance of Lucas Digne on the opposite flank. But, his impressive chance-creation, coupled with his dribbling prowess, makes him a tailor-made fit for the Toffees.
Chelsea’s transfer ban could complicate things
Chelsea’s impending transfer ban will force the club to recall few of their loan players to the first-team next season. And James is one of the candidates, having impressed in the Championships this term.
The transfer ban has already taken a massive hit on Everton’s hopes of retaining the services of Kurt Zouma next season. And given their lack of depth in the defensive department, it’s unlikely that the Blues will want to let of someone like James this summer. Thus, it remains to be seen what transpires in the coming weeks regarding this transfer saga.
