According to a recent report by France Football (via the Metro), Emery wants Arsenal to hijack Manchester United’s attempt to secure the signature of Thomas Meunier from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this campaign. The Daily Mail claimed last week that the Red Devils were looking to recruit the Belgian defender after missing out on Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
However, France Football (via the Metro) has now revealed that the Gunners will provide stiff competition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in pursuit of the €30m-rated Ligue 1 defensive ace during the summer transfer window.
Meunier’s Fruitful Season At The French Capital
The 27-year-old has enjoyed another productive season at Paris after putting in some eye-catching displays for PSG during the recently concluded Ligue 1 campaign. Meunier has featured in 31 matches for the French giants this term, scoring five goals while grabbing seven assists in all competitions. More importantly, he has made an average of 2.0 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 1.0 clearances per game in the French top-flight thus far (Stats via whoscored).
The Sainte-Ode born talent has also earned 36 international caps for Belgium and has registered six goals for his country until now. He would be a great fit at the Emirates Stadium if Unai Emery can orchestrate a deal for him in this offseason.
What Does The Belgian Defender Offer On The Pitch?
Meunier is very quick on the dribble and can make some darting runs down the right flank. The Belgian full-back can also put in some dangerous crosses into the opposition penalty box. He is also a very reliable defender at the back and has enough pace to recover when left isolated in 1v1 situations inside his own half.
Will Meunier Be A Good Fit For The Gunners?
The acquisition of a player of Meunier’s experience will undoubtedly bolster Arsenal’s defensive options ahead of the new season. He will not only be an upgrade over Hector Bellerin going forward but will also provide better defensive cover at the back. Thus, it makes a lot of sense for the North London outfit to opt for his services this summer.
At 27, Meunier is playing the best football of his career which the Gunners could look to benefit from next season. Furthermore, the Belgian international will also add a winning mentality to Emery’s squad as he has won multiple trophies with PSG during his time at Parc des Princes.
