According to the latest reports from the Scotsman, Celtic have enquired about Fortuna Sittard’s midfielder Mark Diemers. The 25-year-old midfielder had an impressive campaign in the Eredivisie where he helped his side avoid relegation. Diemers contributed with eight goals and eight assists in 38 appearances playing as an attacking or central midfielder for the most of the season.
However, Celtic are not likely to find the task of signing him straightforward as quite a few European clubs are keeping track of this talented Dutchman. He is wanted by the likes of Freiburg, Hamburg, Mainz and Gent along with other Dutch heavyweights.
Diemers recently indicated in an interview that he would be willing to leave if a good club comes along. He was quoted as saying, ”I know there is interest in me. I’ve heard a few things about clubs looking at me. If it’s a nice club, I will leave, and if not, I would be more than happy to continue playing for Sittard. But if I do leave, I will have nothing but happy memories of playing here.”
This should come as good news for the Hoops as the player has shown that he is willing to move. It remains to be seen what kind of offer the Bhoys will come up for the midfielder.
The midfielder is contracted at Sittard until 2021. Therefore the Eredivisie outfit can demand a decent sum as the player still has two years left on his contract.
Does Celtic need him?
Recently reports have emerged that Porto are looking to sign Olivier Ntcham. Tom Rogic is also attracting interest from Leicester City, and that could mean that Lennon might be short on attacking midfield options in the summer. Therefore the signing of Diemers can come in handy.
What will he bring to Glasgow?
Diemers is a versatile and dynamic midfielder who can seamlessly play in different kind of roles. He can play in deeper areas as well as play as a no. 10. His goal scoring returns have also been decent, and Celtic can see him as someone similar to Stuart Armstrong. Since Armstrong’s move to Southampton, the Hoops have missed a dynamic midfielder who can provide goals and assists from the middle of the park. Ryan Christie is the only one who managed to hit the ten goal mark as a midfielder, and the club would want to have one more player like that.
The 25-year-old can create those telling moments in the final third, and the Hoops should look to sign him.
