According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, interim boss Neil Lennon’s future is uncertain at Celtic Park even though he is likely to guide Celtic towards the treble. Recently reports from Italy has emerged that the Hoops are considering a move for the current AS Roma manager Claudio Ranieri who is likely to leave the Italian heavyweights soon.
The Bhoys have been linked with some high profile names in the past few months, and it remains to be seen what the board would decide in the next few weeks. Lennon didn’t help his cause recently when his side went down tamely to Rangers as they suffered a 2-0 defeat. More than the loss, the performance of the players should make the fans and the board sceptical about appointing the Northern Irish manager permanently.
Ranieri has been in the management business since 1986, and he is still showing the hunger to work even at this day and age. His recent move to Fulham didn’t work out as the Cottagers got relegated to the Championship. The Italian has managed over 17 teams in his football management career so far, but he would best be remembered for his triumph with English outfit Leicester City.
The Italian and his team stunned the world despite being given 5,000-1 odds of winning the Premier League in 2016. The fairytale was almost too good to be true as Leicester went on to win the Premier League.
He even guided the Foxes to the Champions League quarter-finals in the following season. However, Leicester had lost their mojo from the title-winning year, and Ranieri was shown the door from the club.
Can Ranieri be the answer for Celtic?
Over Lennon, Ranieri can be a decent bet. His experience of managing in all situations and different countries will come in handy. The 67-year-old would also help Celtic get certain players from Italy who can turn out to be shrewd signings for the club. With Leicester, he was known to play direct and counter-attacking football. Ranieri is known as an excellent motivator, and that is the reason why he managed to bring the best out of an average squad.
However, the manager has had his failures as well in the past. He usually deploys a high energy brand of football, which involves a lot of pressing. He is also known for his defensive solidity and organisation. We feel that someone like him can be a shrewd signing for Celtic as they are likely to go through a massive squad overhaul. An experienced man like him who must have seen it all in his managerial career can guide them during this phase.
