Rangers have already started to do business for the next season, and they need to add a few more impact players who can bring them closer to Celtic. The Hoops are just a win away from achieving another treble, but Rangers were never really the favourites to win the Premiership this season. However, Steven Gerrard would have hoped for a better run in the domestic cup competitions as they were ousted by Aberdeen twice.
Nevertheless, the consensus is that Rangers have improved under Gerrard in the past year and they can look to mount a better challenge in the upcoming season. Around a week back, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd recently indicated that the Gers should look to target David Turnbull of Motherwell who has had a fantastic season.
Boyd was quoted as saying (Sky Sports, SPFL Matters), ”I think there’s a potential that he (Turnbull) could actually move this season. I think that’s how good a season he has had. When Rangers and Celtic come calling, it is very difficult to say no, and we all know nowadays in football, if you don’t take that opportunity, it might not come again, and I think, if Motherwell were to get a very, very good offer in the summer, it would be very hard to turn down.”
What will Turnbull bring to Ibrox?
The 19-year-old versatile central midfielder had a fantastic campaign as he managed 16 goals and seven assists. Those are incredible numbers for a central midfielder and the fact that he is just 19 showcases that he can improve further from here onwards.
Turnbull has even filled in as a left midfielder, defensive midfielder and as an attacking midfielder from time to time. However, he is at his best in a box to box role, and his performances have not gone unnoticed. Rangers have already signed Turnbull’s team-mate Jake Hastie for the next season, and they can look to sign the midfielder as well.
Worth signing?
However, the midfield is one area where the Bears have plenty of cover. But the likes of Arfield and Steven Davis aren’t long term options, and we feel that Gerrard should consider moving in for Turnbull in the summer. Boyd indicated that the player himself might be willing to move and given that he is 19, the Scotsman is going to be a long term prospect for the club.
The midfielder might be able to come up with better numbers if he plays in a better overall team. Turnbull has his contract with the Well until 2021.
