According to a recent report by the Times, Barcelona have received an £18m bid from West Ham United for their Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes, who was playing on a loan deal at Everton in the second half of the recently concluded Premier League campaign. The same source has also revealed that Gomes is under contract at Nou Camp until the summer of 2021, which means that the Catalans will be under no pressure to sell him in this offseason.
Gomes’ Impressive Loan Spell At Merseyside
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Everton as he managed to secure regular first-team opportunities at Goodison Park this year. Marco Silva’s expert guidance has helped Gomes put in some impressive displays for the Toffees, but that was still not good enough for them to secure European football for next season.
Gomes has featured in 29 matches for the Merseyside outfit this term, finding the back of the net once while creating two assists in all competitions. The Portuguese international had previously represented teams such as Dragon Force, FC Porto, Boavista, Benfica and Valencia before he joined Luis Enrique’s Barcelona side in the summer of 2016.
However, he has failed to regain the faith of Barca’s current manager, Ernesto Valverde so it would be interesting to see what the Spanish head coach decides to do with Gomes this summer.
The ex-Porto midfielder has a wealth of experience after playing for so many different European clubs during his career so he would not feel the pressure of playing in the UEFA Champions League. Gomes has also represented Portugal in 29 matches but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his country so far.
What Does The Portuguese Midfielder Offer On The Pitch?
Gomes can play a wide range of passes and has terrific ball control, which makes him a difficult man to dispossess in the middle of the park. He keeps a cool head when under duress and can read the game well, which is why Barca shouldn’t let him leave on the cheap.
Should The La Liga Champions Part Ways With Gomes This Summer?
If the Catalans receive a sizable offer for Gomes, then it makes a lot of sense for them to sell him this summer. Otherwise, Valverde should consider retaining Gomes’ services for the time being as he has proven his worth enough times to get another chance to shine and showcase his skills at the Nou Camp.
