According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, Steven Gerrard has given Northern Irish striker Kyle Lafferty marching orders and has conveyed to him that he isn’t needed at Ibrox anymore. Something like this was always on the cards as not too long ago, the gaffer had lashed out at certain players including Lafferty for their lack of commitment and desire while facing Liverpool’s u-23 in a friendly.
Cypriot outfit Apollon Limassol are said to be interested, and it remains to be seen whether Rangers would terminate his contract or look to recoup some transfer funds. The Gers signed him for £500,000 last August on a two year deal after Lafferty’s impressive form at Hearts.
Now with Lafferty set to depart, we look at three strikers who can do the job of a targetman in this team.
Uche Ikpeazu
Rangers can once again look at Tynecastle to raid another Hearts player to replace Lafferty. Ikpeazu might have scored just eight goals this season, but he caused a lot of trouble whenever he started. Ikpeazu can return with better numbers if he goes on to play for the Gers. His raw power and ability to link up play makes him a stand out player in the Jambos lineup, and he can be a top option to have as the 24-year-old is currently in the prime of his career.
The striker signed a new contract not too long ago so Hearts might not easily cave in. But Rangers can make a statement if they can manage to get a deal done for this powerhouse of a striker.
Omar Bogle
The Cardiff City striker spent his second half of the season with Portsmouth where he did an excellent job for them. We feel that recently relegated Premier League side Cardiff City might want to sell him in the summer as he is set to enter in the final year of his contract. Bogle can hold up play well, and he is a livewire upfront who showcases an impressive work rate.
Andy Carroll
The forward is going to be available on a free transfer as his contract with West Ham United is set to expire. At his best, the 30-year-old was one of the best targetman in the Premier League, but injury issues have troubled him in the past few years. Nevertheless, we feel that he can make a difference at Rangers if he remains fit and available.
Maybe Gerrard can have a pay as you play terms in his contract. His wages might also be an issue, but the fact that he is coming on a free transfer means that Gerrard can use the saved up transfer funds to pay his wages.
