Rangers are likely to fall short of Celtic in stopping them from achieving the treble, but they have shown promising signs in the past few months. It is clear that the team needs to add more firepower to the roster for the next season to run Celtic close.
One key strategy which Gerrard has used since he took over is signing players whose contract are set to run out. The likes of Jon Flanagan, Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Gareth McAuley were signed on a free transfer and barring McAuley, the other three have played a decent role for Rangers.
We have already seen Gerrard signing Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie on a pre-contract deal, and we can expect the manager to look for more hidden gems. Here are three players from the Premier League who are soon going to be a free agent that Rangers can go after.
Daniel Sturridge
The Liverpool forward has played bits and pieces role for the Merseyside club this season. Ever since the fantastic season which he had in the 2013-14 campaign, the England striker’s time has been cut short due to various injuries. This season he has managed to remain injury free and has popped in with some crucial goals for the Merseyside club.
On his day, the 29-year-old can still create that magic in the final third and Gerrard can bring in his former team-mate at Ibrox. He showcases good pace and dribbling skills, and if presented with an opportunity, the forward can score regularly. Injuries have been an issue for him, but Sturridge has managed to stay injury free this season for the Reds.
Gary Cahill
The Chelsea defender could be in massive demand in the summer. The centre back has been sidelined ever since Maurizio Sarri took over and the English defender has barely featured for the Pensioners. Nevertheless, we still feel that he can play football at the top level for another few years.
Rangers need a leader at the back and Cahill’s experience of playing for club and country at the topmost level can come in handy. The 33-year-old is strong in the air, and he has those physical capabilities to take on the challenges of the Premiership.
Neeskens Kebano
The former PSG playmaker hardly made any impact in the Premier League with Fulham. Rangers are desperately in need of an attacking midfielder, and Kebano can be a decent bet for Gerrard. The Congolese international has decent pace and dribbling skills, and once he gets some game time under his belt, he can turn out to be a shrewd signing.
