Portuguese players and Wolves, there is probably no better love story in football right now. The way things are going that day couldn’t be far off when Cristiano Ronaldo decides to turn up for Wolves in the final few years of his career. Coming to the original reports, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now being linked with a move for Southampton’s fullback Cedric Soares.
The Portuguese international moved to Inter Milan on loan in January. However, reports from TuttoMercatoWeb conveys that the Italian heavyweights are reluctant to sign him permanently.
As a result of this reluctance, Jorge Mendes can offer the player who is being valued at €11.5m to the West Midlands club. Milan does have an option to turn the deal into a permanent one, but the chances are they would not exercise that right.
What Can Soares Bring To The Table?
Like all modern-day fullbacks, Soares is an attack-minded right back, and he can play further up the pitch as a right midfielder. Even on the defensive front, the 27-year-old is quite dependable and that is why he is more or less regular for his national team as well. The defender has over 100 appearances in the Premier League, and Wolves will be adding a proven player at this level.
How Does He Fit into Santo’s system?
Nuno Santo is earning a lot of plaudits for the work which he has done with Wolves this season. Outside the top 6, they have emerged as the best team and currently, they are in line to take place in the Europa League qualifiers. From playing Championship football to playing in Europa in no time, the manager deserves some special attention for this.
Santo’s team are perfectly set up to play on the counter-attack, and the wing-backs play a significant role in his side. At present, Matt Doherty occupies the right wing back spot for Wolves, and he has come up with six goals and eight assists in all competitions so far. The Irish international has done well, but apart from him, there are no outright right backs or right wing backs in the squad. Therefore, Soares will add more depth and competitions to places if he secures a move to Molineux.
Chances of Wolves Signing Him?
The ball is still in Inter Milan’s court as they have an option to buy him permanently. Therefore Wolves are going to be the second favourites at the moment. However, with the Italian heavyweights not fancying the player, Nuno Santo can definitely get his hands on this Portuguese international.
