Rangers have been linked with Hearts’ defender John Souttar recently, but English club Derby County also seems to be very interested in him. Moreover, the fact that Souttar signed a new deal with the Jambos not too long ago indicates that he wouldn’t come in cheap in the summer.
The Gers could be priced out of a move (Our opinion), and another alternative they can go for is Curtis Tilt. The Blackpool defender was linked with the Bears in the summer of 2018, but the move didn’t materialise then. This deal can be beneficial for the Gers this summer though as the 27-year-old is going to be available on a free transfer as his contract with Blackpool is in the last few months.
The defender even talked about Rangers’ interest in January this year and said, ”I’ve heard about Rangers, and the thought of Steven Gerrard being interested is amazing. It would be great to play for him.”
It’s clear that the defender would jump at an opportunity to play for the Gers and on a free transfer, he can turn out to be a shrewd signing for the club.
Why do Rangers need to go after a defender?
Rangers signed four defenders last summer in the form of Joe Worrall, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and Gareth McAuley. Worrall and McAuley joined on loan and one year deal respectively, and as things stand, the Bears will lose two defenders in the next few months. Therefore we expect Gerrard to go after a centre back or even two in the summer. Moreover, Goldson has also looked vulnerable on occasions, and Gerrard would want to have a reliable option for the next season.
What will Tilt offer?
The defenders stand at 6’3” and has that physical side to his game which should stand him in good stead in the Premiership. In Scotland, defenders need to be good in the air and should be robust enough to cope up with the challenges. Tilt is perfect on those parameters.
The defender has been the mainstay of Blackpool this season as he has 40 appearances to his name. The English defender even has four goals and three assists to his name which showcases that he can be lethal while attacking set pieces as well. Tilt is a left-footed centre back which should suit Gerrard’s plans, and he is definitely worth taking a punt over. Moving to Rangers will be a step up for the defender, but he has enough experience which suggests to us that he can thrive at Ibrox.
