According to the recent comments made by transfer expert, Ian McGarry (via the Express), Liverpool are inching closer towards securing the services of Timo Werner from Red Bull Leipzig this summer. In a recent interview with the Transfer Window Podcast (via the Express), McGarry revealed that the Reds are close to agreeing on terms with the German international and said, “This (Werner) is a guy who since he signed from Stuttgart in 2016 has scored 60 goals in only 108 appearances – so he’s got a very good goals-to-games ratio.
“(He’s a) 23-year-old German international, has been interesting Liverpool for a long time.
“As we all know on the Transfer Window Podcast, and our educated listeners know this as well, when a player refuses to sign a new contract it’s usually because he’s got an agreement in place somewhere else.
“My information is Liverpool are very close to agreeing personal terms with Werner.
“Obviously they have been lacking a natural No 9 out-and-out striker for some time.”
McGarry’s recent comments will delight a lot of Liverpool fans as the Merseyside club is currently lacking a bit of firepower in the striking department as Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have an out and out number 9 who can play as a centre-forward up top. Roberto Firmino has done well while operating as a false-9 striker, but the Brazilian is more known for his playmaking abilities rather than his ruthless nature in front of goal.
Will Werner Be A Good Fit At Anfield?
Hence, recruiting a new striker like Werner, who can be lethal in the final third, could help the Merseyside outfit challenge for major trophies in the coming years. The German frontman has enjoyed another prolific campaign with RB Leipzig this term after he put in some match-winning displays in the Bundesliga during this campaign thus far.
The German’s Prolific Record At Leipzig This Season
The 23-year-old has registered 17 goals and created six assists in 31 matches for Ralf Rangnick’s team this term across all competitions. His numbers are quite similar to Firmino’s, but Werner offers more pace and athleticism up front.
The German has an incredible turn of speed and can make some well-timed runs behind the opposition backline. More importantly, he is a proven goal-scorer as his record in the German top-flight over the past few seasons has been quite impressive.
Is Werner The Right Option For Klopp?
Thus, Werner could be a fantastic option for Klopp to consider recruiting in this off-season. He will not only improve the quality of the Liverpool first-team but will also provide some healthy competition for places within the Reds frontline.
