According to the latest report from Wales Online, Tottenham Hotspur are going to go head to head with Manchester City, Leeds United and other clubs for the signature of Swansea City’s star winger Daniel James. The Wales international has been in the limelight after his move to Leeds United fell through under dramatic circumstances on the final day of the January transfer window.
Often players who are involved in such a saga are distracted and are unable to produce desired results on the pitch. However, it seemed to have gone the other way round with James. Since January, the 21-year-old has been in terrific form, and as a result, he has caught the imagination of certain Premier League heavyweights as well.
Spurs are expected to bolster their squad in the upcoming summer as they haven’t spent a single penny in the last two transfer windows. James is a rising star and his recent performance showcases that he can take on the challenge at the top level as well.
What can he bring to the table?
The Wales international has terrific pace, but he also can keep his composure in the final third by finding the right pass or finishing off the move. Recently, James put in a terrific performance against the Citizens where he toyed with the likes of Kyle Walker and Nicolas Otamendi.
Another aspect where the winger stands out is his work-rate. James is willing to press and track back for his team when required, and an attitude like that goes in a long way in helping the team.
Where does he fit into Spurs’ system?
Tottenham currently only have Son Heung Min as an outright left winger, but the Korean often plays in a free role in the final third as a secondary striker. Therefore one can understand why Pochettino could be after a left-sided winger as James fits the bill well.
Challenges for Tottenham
Leeds United have been interested in him for quite some time, and they are again expected to go after him. Beating Manchester City can also turn out to be tough as the Citizens can easily outbid Spurs if they want to. Moreover, Swansea are in negotiations with the winger for a new contract. Therefore if the player signs the new deal, then Spurs will have to shell top money to sign him. Leeds United were close to signing him for £10m in January but after his recent form, that amount could easily be doubled.
