According to the latest reports from Wales Online, a handful of Premier League clubs are showing interest in Swansea City’s winger Daniel James. Manchester City were already linked with him, but now the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth and Leicester City have let their interest known for the Scottish international.
All this news would infuriate Leeds United as with every passing day, their chances of signing this talented winger is diminishing. The Whites came perilously close in signing the 21-year-old in January, but somehow the Swans were able to keep hold of their man.
Why Leeds United Need Him?
Marcelo Bielsa and his players have been quite flexible in their approach, and that has allowed them to fight for the direct promotion spots even with such a thin squad. Currently, the Whites deploy Jack Harrison down the left flank, but the winger is only on loan from Manchester City which is set to expire in the summer.
Apart from that, Ezgjan Alioski has played in that position, but it is clear that the Macedonian is much more suited to play as a fullback. Therefore the Whites will only have Jack Clarke as their only left winger for the upcoming season.
Daniel James would have been a massive signing for the Whites in January, but now they need to pin their hopes on moving to the Premier League to lure him. Even that might not be enough now with Premier League heavyweights like Tottenham and Manchester City entering the race for the Wales international.
The Whites were close to signing him for £10m in January, but we feel that there could be a significant bidding war between the clubs for the winger. Moreover, Swansea City are in negotiations to extend James’ deal further which would definitely push up his price.
Chances Of Leeds United Signing Him?
James has caught the attention of everyone in the past two odd months. His performance for Wales against Slovakia was breathtaking, and his performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup helped him garner some more limelight. The way the winger troubled some top Premier League defender showcases that the speedster can handle himself against the big boys. So it is no surprise that so many Premier League clubs have expressed their desire to sign him.
Any hopes of the West Yorkshire outfit signing this winger hinges on United moving to the Premier League. The Whites can probably offer James more regular game time than some Premier League clubs. So that is the one thing which can work in United’s favour. But we will have to say that the latest report is a major blow for Bielsa.
