One half of Glasgow is debating on who would take the top job at Celtic Park next season permanently. Neil Lennon hasn’t done much wrong after taking over in February, but the Hoops are being linked with some exciting names. Lennon remains the favourite to take the job permanently especially if he goes on to deliver the treble. Scott Brown recently claimed that the 47-year-old would be the perfect man to fill in Brendan Rodgers’ shoes.
Now Brown’s midfield partner, Callum McGregor also iterated similar sentiments as he wants the board to take a cue from Manchester United.
What did McGregor say?
He said (The Scotsman), ”If you see the success with Solskjaer at Man Utd – people will ultimately judge you on success. It( Having the manager situation sorted) gives the club a focus. The new season comes pretty quickly. You only have three to four weeks off and then it’s straight back into the big games again. The sooner it is done the better for everyone.”
”He (Neil Lennon) has to have a case to get it. The transition since he has come in again has been excellent. He has the players hungry for success. He is a born winner as well and he’s bringing that out in the team. The stats and the performances, the results have been excellent. He has been proven here over his time before. He knows the fabric of the club and he knows everyone inside out.”
When senior players like Brown and McGregor are coming out publicly and making a case for Lennon, then it’s more or less likely that the board will have to appoint him in the summer. It is clear that most of the dressing room is behind him and it seems unlikely that the board will go for any other option in the summer.
Why Lennon might not be the best choice?
We think that Lennon will stagnate the club and the Hoops would be better off appointing someone else. As for the players, we believe that they would come around the new manager if he is an experienced man. The fact that Lennon knows the club inside out has helped him settled in comfortably.
A new manager will come in with new ideas, new training methods and the players will have to adapt and prove themselves again to the new gaffer. It seems like they are happy to be in their comfort zone, and that way the club will not be able to reach the next level.
The likes of Rafael Benitez, Roberto Martinez and even someone like Andre Villas-Boas (all have been linked with the Celtic job) can take the team to the next level, and that is what the club should aspire to do.
