Rangers have been linked with Birmingham City’s attacker Greg Stewart in the past week or so. Stewart is currently on loan with Aberdeen, and it seems like Gerrard has taken a liking to the player. As per latest reports from the Express, Gerrard wants to make Stewart his first signing of the upcoming summer transfer window. Reportedly Rangers held talks with the player this week regarding a move in the summer.
Stewart is currently in the final few months of his contract with Championship outfit Birmingham City. He is going to stay at Pittodrie until the end of the season and will become a free agent soon after that. Rangers made quite a few clever free agents signings last summer, and it seems like that is set to continue this summer as well.
What works for Stewart?
The Scotsman is a versatile player as he can play in various roles in the attacking half of the pitch. However, he is best suited to either lead the line or play as a secondary striker. The 29-year-old had spent the first half of the season on loan with Kilmarnock where he managed an impressive return of nine goals and nine assists.
Stewart showcases impressive pace, and that is the reason why he can play on either of the flanks as well. Moreover, he is going to be available on a free transfer so it will pretty much be a no-risk signing for the Bears.
Where can he fit in at Rangers?
Rangers need an outright no. 10 who can make the difference in the final third by setting up his team-mates. Gerrard’s men have often struggled to go past teams who sit back and defend in numbers. In games like that, one always feels that Ranger is missing that creative spark in midfield and that is a role where Stewart might come in. So maybe Gerrard has identified him as an attacking midfielder.
What doesn’t work for him?
His form since January has been poor as he is yet to provide any attacking return for the Dons. Rangers need to look to sign players who can ”definitely” make the difference and improve the squad. Stewart on a free transfer might seem like a decent acquisition. But the club needs to look beyond these bits and pieces kind of players who can do a little bit of everything.
Gerrard should look to sign an outright no.10 in the summer. The 29-year-old might be able to do a job, but if Rangers want to stop Celtic, then the club should look to sign someone who can be a game changer for them.
