According to the Mirror’s Neil Moxley (via Chronicle Live), Paris Saint-Germain are considering replacing Thomas Tuchel with Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez at the end of this campaign. The same source has also mentioned that Marseille are interested in the Spanish head coach as well so the Magpies will have a battle on their hands to keep Benitez at St. James’ Park beyond this summer.
Benitez’s Incredible Record At Newcastle With Limited Resources
The former Liverpool manager has steered Newcastle away from the relegation zone despite not having the luxury of being financially backed in the transfer market. The Tyneside giants are currently sitting safely in the 13th position, a healthy 11 points above the relegation zone in the league table.
Since being appointed as the manager of Newcastle back in 2016, Benitez has done remarkably well to establish the club as a Premier League regular. However, if the Tynesiders do not back him in the upcoming transfer market, then there is a real possibility that a foreign club could poach him ahead of the new campaign.
The Spaniard’s Record Proves That He Is Great At What He Does
The Spaniard is a master tactician and has a glowing managerial C.V. which is why it is not a surprise to see some of the European elites trying to acquire him. Benitez, who has previously won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool, has taken charge of 144 matches for the Magpies, winning 61, drawing 30 and losing 53 of those matches across all competitions. He also has a healthy PPG (Points Per Game) average of 1.48 which is a remarkable feat considering the limited resources at his disposal (Stats taken from Transfermrkt).
Why The Magpies Cannot Lose Benitez
The Premier League outfit cannot afford to let their manager leave at any cost. They risk being relegated in the coming years if Benitez leaves St. James’ Park which could, in turn, have a ripple effect and hand all the power back to the club’s owner Mike Ashley.
Hence, the Magpies should try everything they can to try and resolve the Spanish boss’ long-term future at Tyneside. If backed with some considerable financial support, Benitez has the track record to prove that he can take Newcastle to new heights, so it is a no-brainer to retain his services for the long-run.
