Everton entertained Arsenal at Goodison Park earlier today hoping to continue their recent good form in front of their home supporters. The Toffees took the game to the Gunners early on and scored via Phil Jagielka’s tap in from close range in the 10th minute. The North London giants had only one shot on target in the first half which was just not good enough to merit a goal.
The second half was more of the same with Marco Silva’s men looking to expose the underperforming Arsenal defenders on the counter. The visitors did manage to stay in the contest but couldn’t conjure up the equaliser in the end. The match finished with the final scoreline of 1-0 in Everton’s favour.
Let’s take a look at how each Everton player performed during the game against the Gunners.
GK: Jordan Pickford – 7/10
To the surprise of many, he was hardly tested by the Arsenal attackers during the game and thus, kept a comfortable clean sheet at the back.
RB: Seamus Coleman – 8/10
The full-back was a good outlet for Everton down the right flank. He also defended well in his own half and worked hard for his team to see out a hard-fought win on the day.
CB: Phil Jagielka – 8.5/10
The Toffees skipper was there at the right place at the right time when he tapped in from close range to give Everton the lead in the first half. He also commanded his own box and kept Alexandre Lacazette quiet during the contest.
CB: Kurt Zouma – 8/10
He didn’t put a foot wrong in defence. Zouma made a few crucial clearances during the game and got a clean sheet to show for his efforts.
LB: Lucas Digne – 6/10
The French full-back was defensively sound but lacked the cutting edge going forward.
CM: André Gomes – 8/10
He dominated the midfield and showed once again why he is so highly rated in European football. Another superb display from the Portuguese playmaker!
CM: Idrissa Gueye – 7.5/10
The Frenchman worked his socks off in midfield and was full of running in the opposition half.
RM: Richarlison – 6/10
The Brazilian was unusually quiet in the first half but was a constant threat in the second. However, he squandered a few golden opportunities in the second half to kill the contest off as he lacked the composure to come up with the finishing touch.
CAM: Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6.5/10
The Icelandic midfielder put in a tireless shift in the Arsenal half but just like his teammate, Richarlison; he was wasteful with his attempts in the second half.
LAM: Bernard – 8/10
He was full of pace and trickery down the left flank and caused a lot of problems for the Gunners defenders.
ST: Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 8.5/10
His work ethic and desire to get on the ball saw him wreak havoc inside the Arsenal penalty box.
Substitutes:
RM: Theo Walcott – 6/10
The English winger brought some energy and pace to the Toffees attack.
LM: Ademola Lookman – N/A
Not enough time to influence the game.
CM: Tom Davies – N/A
He came on to run the clock down for the home side.
