According to the latest reports from Football Scotland, Rangers have been linked with a move for Norwich City defender Timm Klose. The Swiss centre back played a crucial role for the Canaries in the earlier part of the season as they have won promotion back to the Premier League and are likely to win the Championship title.
However, Daniel Farke later went on to use Ben Godfrey in defence, and Klose has had to bide his time on the bench.
The defender is being valued at £3.5m and Gerrard is believed to be keen on signing him. The 30-year-old is also a 17 time Swiss international and had extensive experience of playing in the Bundesliga.
Why Rangers need a defender?
The Bears are likely to lose the services of Joe Worrall who has played quite a few games for Rangers this season. Gareth McAuley might not have played many games, but he will also be missed as he added an option on the bench. Therefore the club is going to lose two central defenders in the summer, so we expect the club to sign atleast two players as replacements.
Is Klose good enough?
The former Wolfsburg player has decent defensive qualities and has that physical side to his game which should stand him in good stead in the Premiership. Rangers have often lacked communication at the back, and his experience of playing in some of the top divisions could come in handy. Klose is also a decent passer of the ball, and he can help build up attacks from the back.
Is he worth £3.5m?
That’s a tough call for us as the defender is already 30 and Rangers are unlikely to recover that money in a few years time if they decide to sell him. However, the upcoming season is going to be a crucial one for Gerrard and Co, and he would need readymade players who can start producing the goods straight away. Gerrard cannot afford to take a punt on unknown quantities and ”potential talents” if he wants his side to stop Celtic next season.
So we feel that Klose could be worth his price. However, one would understand if Gerrard tries to bring his price down give the fact that he will turn 31 in the next few days. His experience and quality should shine through, and if his recent performances from Championship are to go by, the Swiss international can be a decent bet for Rangers next season.
