The 2018-19 football season is nearing its conclusion and Rangers, under Steven Gerrard, has exhibited significant improvement despite failing to challenge Celtic for the Scottish throne. They, however, are rebuilding to reclaim the lost glory, and a smart summer might see them closing the gap with Celtic even more.
Gerrard, meanwhile, has not singled out any name he is targetting prior to the upcoming campaign but assessing options who are out of contract at the end of the ongoing term.
“We certainly know the players we want to take with us going forward, we are at the stage of the season where you can go and identify players but until the window opens you can’t go and get the targets, at the minute we have to go after free contracts.”
Stated former England and Liverpool great (as quoted by The Scotsman) keeping the door open for Bosman signings. He has already used his contacts and shown his reach by roping in Jermain Defoe back in January. The renowned names of Premier League could be fancied more often now, and a move for James Milner should be considered once his contract runs out this summer.
The versatile Englishman has been stupendous for Liverpool since completing a free transfer from Manchester City in 2015. He is still going strong at the age of 33 and playing a key role in their boisterous Premier League as well as Champions League run.
The 61-time capped former Three Lions international opened up on a possible move to Scotland at the start of the season (in an exclusive interview with the Herald) and it is time for Gerrard to manoeuvre the Liverpool influence to convince his fellow countryman to experience a new challenge.
Milner has been tipped to complete a move to his boyhood club Leeds United if they manage to secure a long-awaited Premier League return. The Whites were favourites to grab automatic promotion until recent weeks when a couple of defeats against Wigan and Brentford derailed their season. They might have to push for the playoffs now, and the growing uncertainty over Leeds United’s future might see the Liverpool veteran keeping his options open for a possible summer switch.
James Milner is an asset to any side both on and off the pitch. He is a true professional with experience of the highest order and still has years left in him due to a strong build, fitness and hard work. Although his wages might be a constraint for the Glasgow giants, a player of Milner’s stature would indeed set an example and raise the bar high en route to claiming silverware.
