Alfredo Morelos let the team down in the just gone by derby, and it was clear that Steven Gerrard had enough of him. With every passing day, it looks more and more likely that the Colombian will be sold in the upcoming summer. Rangers will look to cash in on him, but his temperament could be one of the reasons why some teams might consider him as a gamble. Nevertheless, Gerrard needs to keep one eye on his replacement.
One player Rangers can go for is Daniel Sturridge. The Liverpool forward has fallen well behind the pecking order at Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp has often used Divock Origi as the backup option. Moreover, the English striker is in the final few months of his contract, and there are no signs yet that the Merseyside outfit will offer him a new deal.
What will Sturridge bring at Ibrox?
At his best, the English striker was one of the best centre forwards in the Premier League. Injuries have always been an issue with him throughout his career, but the forward has managed to remain injury free this campaign for the Reds.
Even though the 29-year-old hasn’t been regular, he scored some memorable goals for the Merseyside club this season against Chelsea in the Premier League and one against Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League.
It’s clear that he can still operate at the top level, and there is no doubt in our mind that the forward can replace Morelos’ 30 odd goals if remains fit. The striker has a moment of magic in him, and Rangers have often missed that this season against teams who like to sit back.
Chances of Rangers signing him
With Gerrard at the helm at Rangers, that can be enough to persuade the forward. Some Premier League clubs might also want the English striker so there could be some competition for the player. Nevertheless, he can be a regular starter at Ibrox which some English club might not be able to give him at this stage of his career.
Moreover, the fact that he is available on a free transfer should mean that Rangers can use the money saved on him to offer him decent wages. It remains to be seen whether the striker would prefer a move to Scotland when he can probably still play for a few years in the English top flight. Rangers and Gerrard should definitely try their luck in the upcoming transfer window to sign this 26 time England international.
