According to a recent report by Canal + (via the Daily Mirror), Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot has reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid to join them on a free transfer at the end of this campaign. The French midfielder has been linked with a whole host of clubs which include Liverpool (via the Mirror), but it seems like he is destined to move to the Spanish capital next summer.
Klopp’s Need To Address Creative Problems In Midfield
This recent development will be a massive blow for Jurgen Klopp and his chances of landing Rabiot ahead of the new season. The Reds would now have to concentrate on some of their other summer transfer targets to try and address their creative issues in midfield which has been exposed at times this season.
Liverpool have enjoyed a remarkable campaign thus far, especially in the Premier League. But they have sometimes lacked quality in midfield as evidenced by their performances against Manchester United and Everton respectively last month. The Reds need to find a new midfielder this summer who can come in and be a capable playmaker at the centre of the park.
What Does Rabiot Offer On The Pitch?
Rabiot primarily operates as a holding midfielder but can also play in a box-to-box role if required. The Saint-Maurice born talent has made a total of 20 appearances for the Ligue 1 heavyweights this term, scoring on two occasions while creating two assists across multiple competitions. He has also represented France in six matches at the international level.
The French playmaker is physically strong and is full of energy and running in midfield. He can link up play well with others and hardly gives away the ball. Hence, Klopp should be quite disappointed as Rabiot would have been a perfect fit for his style of play at Merseyside.
Big Blow For Liverpool?
Rabiot has hardly played for PSG of late, but he would have been a fantastic addition to Klopp’s midfield at Anfield as his playmaking abilities would have been welcomed with open arms. None of the current Liverpool midfielders has shown enough consistency on the pitch in terms of creating chances in the opposition half. Hence, missing out on Rabiot will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Merseyside club.
