It was a revenge match for Manchester City as they took on Tottenham Hotspur in their own backyard. The two teams played an unforgettable game in the Champions League midweek as the Citizens, despite winning the second leg of the quarterfinal round, were knocked out by the away goal rule as Spurs had won the first leg by 1-0 at White Hart Lane.
The reigning Premier League champions came out with all guns blazing today against a relatively weaker Spurs side. It was Phil Foden who scored the opening goal of the match in the early minutes, which turned out to be the only goal as well.
Both the sides wasted many chances as the encounter ended at 1-0, leaving Pep Guardiola’s men one step closer to defending their Premier League title successfully. Here is how the Manchester City players were rated from their win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Ederson: 7
Made some crucial saves throughout the match. Had a decent outing overall.
Kyle Walker: 6.5
His darting runs down the right flank were good enough to get the better of Ben Davies. His backtracking was not that great though.
John Stones: 7
Dished out a reliable performance in the backline on his return to the first team. Held the fort well against the threats of Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli.
Aymeric Laporte: 7
In complete contrast to his nervous display against Spurs in the last outing, it was a re-energised performance from the Frenchman as he made sure no one could go past him.
Oleksandr Zinchenko: 6.5
Looked very confident as he went forward with the ball on a number of occasions. Struggled a little while backtracking though.
Ilkay Gundogan: 6
Looked a little unsettled against Eric Dier while vying for the ball in the first half. Kept his composure high in the second half and did well to snatch the ball back on quite a few occasions.
Phil Foden: 7
Started on a very positive note as he headed home the winner from close range in the 5th minute of the match. Passed the ball accurately to initiate attacks from the middle of the pitch.
Kevin De Bruyne: 6
Looked agile while going forward with a keen eye for a good pass. His stay, unfortunately, ended prematurely as he had to leave the field after picking up a knock in the first half.
Bernardo Silva: 7
His classy footwork was good enough to get the better of Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies on several occasions. Was a constant threat going forward for the Citizens.
Raheem Sterling: 6.5
Picked his spot well on some occasions but lacked the accuracy in his shots. Deceived Juan Foyth quite a few times with his brilliant skills.
Sergio Aguero: 7
Looked to make amends for his mistake that cost his side the tie on the other night as he went forward with a lot of vigour. It was his touch that laid the ball off for Foden for the goal.
Substitutes
Fernandinho: 6
Did well as he held the midfield well after coming on for De Bruyne in the first half.
Leroy Sane: 6
Looked to get the ball into the danger area on a number of occasions at the end of his darting runs down the middle of the pitch.
David Silva: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
