A thumping 4-0 win against Manchester United at the Goodison Park took care of Everton’s disappointment of a shocking 2-0 defeat against Fulham a week before. The Toffees are now one of the prime contenders for grabbing a European place finish, and a successful summer should see them challenging the league’s ‘big six’ from the next term onwards.
They, meanwhile, are already identifying their objectives for the upcoming window and as per the latest reports from Liverpool Echo, Everton are keen 0n tying down Kurt Zouma permanently after the defender impressed on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The 24-year-old France international, though surplus to requirements at the Stamford Bridge, was determined to return as a better player and grab a first-team role in the long run.
“I know my injuries stopped me in the way I wanted to play, but injuries are part of football and I want to show people I can come back and play there. That’s why I need some game time at Everton because they are a good team.”
Stated the player (as quoted by the Telegraph) when asked whether he has considered quitting the club after being loaned out for consecutive seasons.
But the things have taken a twist in recent weeks with Zouma keeping the door open for a potential permanent switch.
“Where I will be is where I know I have a chance to play. If it is here or somewhere else – I don’t know where – I just want to enjoy myself and to keep playing. I am very happy. I am enjoying my season. I am enjoying my time here. It is not finished yet. I am still enjoying it.”
The centre-back did not hide his ecstasy while speaking to Sky Sports and the Merseysiders are now confident of convincing him to stay in order to attain regular minutes. There would be uncertainty over his playing time in West London, but the confusion over Chelsea’s potential transfer ban might see the club recalling one of their most prominent loanees to increase their depth.
Zouma has made 26 league starts this campaign and formed a lethal central defensive partnership alongside Michael Keane. Marco Silva has been impressed by the Frenchman’s influence, as are his teammates Gylfi Sigurdsson and Phil Jagielka who have highlighted his popularity as well as impact both on and off the pitch.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are set to part ways with Gary Cahill in summer when his contract expires. David Luiz, 32, is past his prime and a young individual like Zouma must be viewed as an alternative for years to come. It is still unclear where his future lies, but this ambitious attempt from Everton depicts how desperate they are to regain the lost glory.
