According to the latest reports from the Turkish media outlet Hurriyet, Celtic are one of the interested parties for Wigan Athletic’s playmaker, Nick Powell. Turkish heavyweights Fenerbahce and Besiktas are also said to be involved in this soon to be free agent. The 25-year-old is also garnering interest from English clubs like Burnley, Brighton, Norwich and Derby County as well.
Around ten days back, a report from the Daily Record came out that even Rangers are in the mix for his signature, but there has been no mention about the Bears in the latest story in Hurriyet. However, we believe that Rangers will continue to have an interest in him given their need for a creative player.
One of the reasons why the former Manchester United player is in such demand is because he is currently in the final few months of his contract at the DW Stadium.
There are no signs yet that he would commit to a new deal with the Latics as they sit in the bottom half of the Championship. Given his quality, Powell can easily play for top division clubs.
What will Powell bring to Parkhead?
The English midfielder is an outright attacking midfielder which is often a rare breed to find these days. Powell is an intelligent operator as he can find himself in space between opposition’s defence and midfield lines. His scoring and assists stats are impressive as he has managed 40 goals and 18 assists in 135 appearances for Wigan Athletic. He has that physical side to his game as well which should make him a decent acquisition for Celtic.
Does Celtic really need him?
The Hoops are blessed with creative and attack-minded midfielders. The likes of Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie, Callum McGregor can operate in the no. 10 role and the Bhoys don’t necessarily need a player like Powell desperately. However, given his ability to lead the line and play as a striker, the Hoops can take a punt on him. Moreover, he is going to be a no-risk signing as he is available on a free transfer.
Another reason why Celtic can try to sign him is to stop him from joining Rangers as Powell can be a game changer in the Premiership. It remains to be seen through what the player would prefer as he has plenty of clubs lining up for his signature. A move to the Premier League is also a possible outcome. With Besiktas, he can get a chance to play in European competitions. However, that is something which the Hoops can offer as well.
