According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, Celtic are rumoured to be leading the race for the signature of Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna. The Hoops have continuously been linked with the Scottish international for the past year now, and it would be interesting to see whether anything will materialise in the upcoming summer transfer window.
McKenna recently indicated that he could leave the club if he wins a title with them. The defenders recently said, ”I don’t know when I’ll move on from Aberdeen but I want to make sure when I do, I’ve moved on from a successful team. I don’t want to be known for being part of the generation who came after the League Cup winners who didn’t really achieve anything. If I’m going to leave Aberdeen, I want to do it with a Scottish Cup.”
The Dons are going to square up with Celtic this weekend in the Scottish Cup semi-finals, and a win for them is likely to make them the favourites to take the title. However, Celtic would be keen on achieving their treble so the Dons will have to play out of their skins to cause an upset.
Why Celtic will need a defender in the summer?
The Bhoys are likely to lose Dedryck Boyata in the summer as he is already being linked with Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin. Moreover, Filip Benkovic is also going to return to his parent club after his loan spell expires. Therefore that would create two vacancies at the back for the Hoops. There is no doubt that the club would need to sign a new centre back in the summer.
Why McKenna fits the bill perfectly?
The Scotsman has shown once again this season that he is ready to play at a higher level. He has been a standout defender for the Dons for quite some time now. The defender has everything to his repertoire that a top centre back needs. He is up for a physical battle which is often very important in this division.
Along with that, the 22-year-old reads the game well and has often bailed his team out with well-timed tackles and interceptions. To top it all of, McKenna is also comfortable at playing out from the back, and that makes him a perfect package.
How much Celtic might have to pay for the defender?
The Bhoys had put in a bid of £3.5m last summer which was shot down by Derek McInnes. The Daily Record reported that Aberdeen would demand £10m. It remains to be seen whether the Dons would bring down the valuation of the defender from last summer.
