Newcastle United’s mini-run of good form where they accumulated 7 points in three games was halted last weekend as they got beaten by West Ham United. Next, the Magpies host Everton at St. James’ Park and Rafael Benitez would be keen to get further away from the relegation spots.
However, Everton have a decent record against the Tyneside outfit as they have won the last four of their five fixtures at Newcastle’s home. The Toon have just won once in their previous 12 encounters against the Toffees. So the history is definitely with the away side in this contest. But we expect United to be defensively organised and astute and Everton will need to bring their A-game to breach the home side’s defence.
Team News
Sean Longstaff who has been a revelation in the past few games is a major doubt as he was substituted early in the last game after suffering a knee injury. Ciaran Clark is also out of this clash due to injury. Apart from that, Benitez should have a strong squad to choose from here.
Newcastle United Predicted Lineup Vs Everton
Formation (5-4-1)
Defence
Martin Dubravka has been impressive more often than not in goal. He is expected to start in between the sticks once again. He should be shielded by a back five as this formation has brought favourable results to the Magpies.
In the heart of the defence, Jamaal Lascelles is a nailed on starter. Fabian Schar has scored some crucial goals off late, but he has also been impressive at the back. He should start on the right with Florian Lejeune on the left in a defensive wall of three.
Out wide, Matt Ritchie’s work rate has made him a good fit in the left back role. DeAndre Yedlin might get the nod ahead of Javier Manquillo to start on the right.
Midfield
With Sean Longstaff out, Jonjo Shelvey might feel that he has a chance to earn back his place in midfield. However, he hasn’t been able to make match day squads in the last few game weeks, so we expect Benitez to go with Mohamed Diame as Longstaff’s replacement. Isaac Hayden should partner him in central areas. January signing Miguel Almiron has looked bright, and we expect him to start down the left flank. Ayoze Perez is expected to operate from the right.
Attack
Salomon Rondon’s hold up play has been impressive, and he often has been the difference maker for his side. The Venezuelan is expected to lead the line once again.
