According to a recent report by Calciomercato, Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski is prepared to pen a new contract and snub interest from Liverpool. The same source has claimed that the Polish international is ready to sign a new deal after Marik Hamsik’s departure last month which has moved him up Carlo Ancelotti’s pecking order at the Naples club.
The Express has revealed that the Reds were linked with a move to secure the services of the Seria A talent in recent months. However, it now seems like the player has decided to opt against a move to Anfield and prolong his stay at the San Paolo Stadium.
The 24-year-old has impressed at times during this campaign, but he has lacked consistency in a Napoli shirt so far. Hence, it might be a blessing in disguise for Jurgen Klopp as there could be better options available in the summer transfer market.
Zielinski has made 37 appearances for Ancelotti’s side this term while registering five goals across all competitions. He is also vastly experienced at the international level, having represented the Polish national side in 41 matches while scoring six goals for his country thus far.
There is no doubt that Zielinski is talented, but there are still some question marks over his ability to put in a high level of performance on a consistent basis. Napoli has done well to retain one of its star players so it could be a good deal for both the player and the club.
As for Liverpool, they are better of concentrating on other players who have proved their worth at the highest level over a sustained period. Klopp has already got some talented box-to-box midfielders in his squad such as Georginio Wijanldum, Naby Keita, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Hence, one could argue that Liverpool needs a more creative force in midfield rather than another box-to-box energetic player like Zielinski.
However, the Polish prospect is versatile at playing in multiple positions in midfield. That could have been a useful tool at Klopp’s disposal. All in all, it seems like the Reds shouldn’t be too bothered about the development and are better of acquiring a more creative talent next summer.
