According to a recent report by talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing the signature of Matías Vecino from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window. The same source has also revealed that Inter are willing to entertain offers in the region of £25m for their prized asset.
The Uruguayan international has enjoyed a solid campaign with the San Siro outfit after managing to establish himself as a regular first-team starter under Luciano Spalletti. Vecino joined Inter from Fiorentina in the summer of 2017.
The 27-year-old has featured in 31 matches for the Italian heavyweights this term, scoring three goals while providing four assists in all competitions. The former Nacional prospect has also managed to secure 31 international caps for the Uruguayan national side and has scored one goal for them so far.
Vecino is a complete midfielder as he can operate in both an attacking role or as a defensive midfielder. He could go a long way in filling the void left by Mousa Dembele’s departure back in January. Furthermore, at 27, the Serie A winger is currently playing at his prime so Spurs will likely benefit from his talents over the next few years.
Vecina boasts a wide passing range and can link up play quite accurately at the middle of the park. He is also physically strong which helps him protect the ball and make tireless runs from midfield. The Uruguayan talent also knows how to defend in his own half and make timely interceptions for his team. However, he does not score goals consistently to merit a start for a big club like Tottenham.
The potential acquisition of Vecino will undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at White Hart Lane. Spurs already have some promising midfield talents in their ranks such as Christian Eriksen, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Eric Dier and Oliver Skipp vying for a place in Pochettino’s first-team. The addition of Vecino will add more competition for positions within the Spurs squad which could help them cope with injuries and suspensions better next season.
Hence, it seems like Vecino could be a shrewd addition who will add some much-needed squad depth if Tottenham can orchestrate a deal for him ahead of the new campaign.
